Makeup Test

Date: March 29, 2003

After going to several anime conventions in costume and then looking at the photos afterwards, I've noticed that my beard stubble tends to show up in photos. I've gotten kind of self-conscious about that, so I decided to try and eliminate the problem with makeup.

So thanks to my friend AJ who helped me figure out what type of make up to get to help hide my stubble. Here's a few test photos of before and after.

This is the before shot. This is me, after a shower with several days worth of beard growth. I find that if I let my beard grow out longer and then shave, I get a much closer shave.

This is after shaving with a Gillette Sensor Excel, which is a two blade razor, and using a new razor cartridge.

Dispite being, "as smooth as an android's butt" (Star Trek: Insurrection) you can still see the roots of the hairs from my beard. This tends to show up in cosplay photos too, which is what I'm trying to get rid of with makeup.

This is a side by side comparison of my face with makeup and without.

I applied moisturizer on my entire face. I then applied the Smashbox "Picture Perfect" makeup primer. After that I applied the concealer on the right side of my face (left side in the photos).

You can tell there's a pretty good decrease in the visible stubble in the photo compared to the side without makeup. Well maybe not a decrease, but more of a smoothing out? I dunno. You can see the difference mostly in the cheeks. The area above my upper lip and my chin looks pretty much the same despite the fact that I only put the concealer on one side. Well there's a subtle difference. Maybe I need to apply more in those areas.

This is the after picture. I've applied the concealer on the left side of my face (right side in the photos) so now I have makeup on both sides of my face. I also decided to put some on my nose to cover up some of the redness, which seems to work pretty well.

The appearance of stubble is not completely gone, but reduced to a pretty acceptable level. Of course this is only a test, I'll see what happens when there's a real photoshoot and I try to do this again.
