April 26-27, 2003WonderCon is a local sci-fi/comic book convention held in San Francisco for the first time. It was taken over by Comic-Con International but it's still a pretty small con. They didn't even have a weapons policy for costumers. :D It was a lot of fun. I found some nice deals in the dealer room, met up with some very nice costumers and got to meet the creator of Babylon 5! Check out the pictures. :)
Photos were taken by me and Moo (pictures marked with *).

AJ as BloodRayne, Me as Zack from Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore and Moo as Xena from Xena: Warrior Princess Taking some fun photos at the stairs of the convention center. I actually really like this one, it actually shows off that my sunglasses are mirrored and cool reflections off the suit. :) I also match the metal railing of the stairs. X-D * Bad-ass Zack. It almost looks like there's a spotlight. * What are the odds of meeting the CTO of Majesco the creator of BloodRayne! That was very cool. :D AJ was pretty speechless herself. :)
We got to meet up with some costumers from Adventurers Place! (The Indiana Jones, Abby Chase and Lara Croft) It was really cool meeting with them and talking to them. They were telling us that on the first day of WonderCon there was almost no costumers and no one asking for photos, which is a bit odd. You usually expect to be asked for photos.
Then it turns out, one person asked to get a photo and apparently everyone realized, oh you can ask for photos. Hehe, I guess this is a different crowd then anime conventions. :) Anyway, go visit their site.
The good Dr. Indiana Jones. Hehe, check out the dust on his trademark hat and shoes, just back from a dig I guess. :D BloodRayne and Indiana Jones. They have a lot in common too! Neither of them like Nazis very much. :D Abby Chase from DangerGirl Abby Chase and Indy The lovely and graceful Lara Croft of Tomb Raider. Actually what's really interesting about the prop guns are that they are really heavy and they even have working triggers and stuff. I guess that's the advantage of going to a con with no weapons policy. :D Lara Croft, Zack and BloodRayne. The girls from DOA-X can eat their hearts out. They've got nothing on these girls. ;-) We were sort of gathering a line of people asking for our photographs so we took the chance to get our own group photo. Lara Croft, BloodRayne, Indiana Jones, Zack and Abby Chase up in front.
Moo dressed up as Xena from the episode "Destiny." You can't imagine how many people asked her about her coinmail armor. No it wasn't lots of chocolate coins! :) Also in front of the convention center stairs for some cool photos. :D BloodRayne and Xena joining forces. Really... there's no subtext here... move along, there's nothing to see here.. So much for the alliance... Cosplay bloopers! X-D
It's Spiderman! Actually the picture doesn't do his costume justice, his eyes were really silver and reflective, but the camera really couldn't catch that. Zack and Spiderman! Hehe, it's actually sort of funny, we were bonding since we both wearing body suits for our costumes. We were also talking about how we had to suck our guts in so that we don't look out of shape. XD * You can never have enough people in shiny, silver costumes! A character from Hajime Sorayama art and Zack waving and scaring the locals. :D * Commander X! Actually we were talking to him and he said that he's dressed up as a mascot for his company that sells embedded IP (internet protocal) devices. But for the sake of WonderCon, he's Commander X! :D His belt and chest plate had working LEDs. I don't know what it is, but it's cool! His eyes were flashing as well, but you can't see that in photos. * I beat Xena has never had to fight anything like that before... or has she? * Moo with a Moo Cow! :D The booth was also called Moo. :) * Magdalena from the Top Cow comic. A very impressive costume. The Joker from Batman Who are you gonna call! Ghostbusters! "Here I come to save the day!" It's Mighty Mouse! Hehe, camera wars! * Usagi Yojimbo A cute Moogle from the Final Fantasy series Moogle and Usagi Yojimbo "The best t-shirt... ever!" Hehe ok, not costumers per say, but I just couldn't stop laughing at the t-shirt. :D The Comic-Book Guy from the Simpsons costuming at a comic convention... ok... I know I'm a geek. :) Thanks for the picture guys!
The one, the only, J. Michael Straczynski (JMS) best known for creating the series Babylon 5, one of my all time favorite sci-fi series.
So there's a funny story about meeting him. He was hosting a panel with fellow author R.A Salvatore. AJ and I walk into the panel in our costumes. We sit there listening to the discussion going on. It was very interesting as they were talking about how they do their writing and their work.
However, JMS stops the discussion because he's distracted by my "periscope" and asked me what I was dressed up as. X-D So I basically yell back that I'm a character from a video game. He was also making some jokes about chaffing and using a lot of baby powder. X-D Everyone in the crowd is looking back at me, it was pretty embarrassing and funny at the same time. I just remember grinning for a long time. :D
Later on, I went to get his autograph. We talked a little bit and asked me if Viagra helped with my costume. X-D Hehe. I then got a picture with him. :D
This is the dilemma I have about costuming. Sometimes I like to get photos with guests or stars in normal clothes. Like I've gotten pictures with Farscape's Virginia Hey and Babylon 5's Claudia Christian. But I guess nothing attracts attenton like a shiny costume. X-D
